German sensor specialist HENSOLDT has secured radar contracts worth more than €100 million ($118.1 million) as part of the German-led European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). The agreements reinforce HENSOLDT’s growing role in strengthening Europe’s integrated air and missile defense architecture amid rising regional security concerns.

Under contracts signed with Diehl Defence, HENSOLDT will deliver additional TRML-4D high-performance radars, along with associated maintenance and training packages. The radars will be deployed with IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense systems operated by several ESSI member states. Based on advanced active electronically scanned array technology, the TRML-4D is capable of detecting, tracking, and classifying a wide range of aerial threats, including cruise missiles, rockets, drones, and aircraft.

HENSOLDT said the ESSI framework has driven strong demand for tightly integrated sensor and interceptor solutions across Europe. The company highlighted that its digital, software-defined, and modular radar designs are helping shorten development timelines while improving performance and adaptability across ESSI deployments. To date, HENSOLDT holds contracts for more than 150 radars of various types under the initiative, including TRML-4D, Spexer short-range, and Twinvis passive radar systems.

The latest radar orders form part of a broader wave of cooperative European procurement under ESSI. In July 2024, Latvia and Slovenia signed contracts for TRML-4D radars paired with IRIS-T SLM systems. Procurement momentum continued in 2025, with Switzerland, Slovenia, and Denmark signing additional agreements with Germany and Diehl Defence to expand medium-range ground-based air defense capabilities, enhancing NATO-compatible protection for military forces and critical infrastructure.
