Admiral Dinesh Tripathi has confirmed that India’s Project-76, aimed at developing a new class of indigenous diesel-electric submarines, is currently in its early design phase. This initiative represents a key step in achieving self-reliance in submarine manufacturing, building upon the experience of Project-75 and Project-75I. The blueprint for the submarine is expected by 2028, with Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approval targeted around 2033–34, after which construction will commence. Competing designs are being prepared by DRDO and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, making this the first Indian submarine class to be entirely designed domestically.
