Japan has offered an upgraded variant of its Mogami-class frigate, tailored to support US-compatible weapon systems, for Australia’s general-purpose frigate program. Developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the vessel is aimed at strengthening naval cooperation between Australia, Japan, and the United States.

The enhanced frigate is one of two finalists shortlisted by Canberra for its 10-billion Australian dollar ($6.62 billion) initiative to modernize its naval fleet. The other contender is Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems with its MEKO A-200 design. A final decision is expected by the end of 2025.

The selected platform will replace the aging Anzac-class frigates and serve various missions, including escort operations, air defense, and surface warfare. Of the 11 ships planned, three will be built overseas, while the remaining vessels will be constructed domestically in Australia, supporting local industry involvement.
