US-based defense contractor Leidos has unveiled a new concept for a commando insertion craft designed to support the Royal Navy under the UK Commando Force (UKCF) modernization program. The vessel, called the “Sea Dagger,” is being introduced as a next-generation solution for rapid deployment and mission flexibility.
Capable of reaching speeds of 40 knots (74 km/h), the Sea Dagger is described as the first craft of its class to integrate speed, range, vehicle delivery, and modular mission systems into a single platform. This design allows it to deliver strike teams, light tactical vehicles, and combat loads efficiently over long distances.
The project is the result of collaboration between Leidos naval architects, Royal Navy experts, and the UKCF. The plan is to field 24 medium surface insertion craft that can operate with advanced sensors, weapon systems, and command-and-control technologies, reflecting the demands of today’s contested battlefields.
Beyond modernization goals, the Sea Dagger aligns with the AUKUS Pillar 2 maritime autonomy objectives and the UK’s Strategic Defence Review. Built for resilience, it is intended to withstand disruption, stress, and enemy action while maintaining continuous operational effectiveness.
