Leonardo DRS and Hofmann Engineering have entered a strategic agreement to co-develop next-generation naval propulsion systems in support of the AUKUS defense partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The collaboration represents a major step toward enhancing allied maritime power and advancing sustainable propulsion solutions for future naval platforms.

The initiative will integrate Leonardo’s experience in advanced electric and hybrid propulsion technologies with Hofmann’s large-scale precision engineering and manufacturing capabilities in Western Australia. Together, the partners aim to strengthen shipbuilding capacity, industrial self-reliance, and supply chain resilience across the AUKUS nations.

A core focus of the project will be the research, design, and development of electric, hybrid, and steam-powered propulsion systems capable of meeting the rising power demands of modern naval fleets. The cooperation will also explore joint export opportunities and technology transfer programs aligned with AUKUS defense priorities and sustainability goals.

Leonardo DRS, already a propulsion systems supplier for the U.S. Navy’s Columbia-class submarines and South Korea’s next-generation warships, stated that this partnership will help secure critical maritime technologies. The effort also aims to expand Australia’s capability to support advanced surface and underwater platforms, reinforcing its position as a key player in allied naval innovation.
