Lithuania has unveiled plans to acquire the Embraer C-390 Millennium, a new-generation military transport aircraft now increasingly adopted among NATO members. The move signals Vilnius’ intent to significantly strengthen its strategic airlift capacity, particularly as operational pressures rise in the Baltic region and Eastern Europe.

Under the plan, Lithuania will purchase three C-390s, with deliveries expected to begin before 2030. These aircraft will gradually replace the C-27J Spartan fleet, offering a generational leap in performance, versatility, and cost efficiency for the nation’s armed forces.

The C-390 Millennium is designed to carry up to 26 tons of cargo, ranging from armored vehicles and helicopters to palletized supplies. It has a cruising speed of 470 knots (870 km/h) and can fly up to 3,260 kilometers with a 23-ton payload, giving NATO forces reliable reach across multiple operational theaters.

Unlike its turboprop predecessors, the jet-powered C-390 ensures faster deployment, improved survivability, and shorter mission times. Its ability to operate from semi-prepared or unpaved airstrips further enhances its value in combat operations, disaster relief, and humanitarian missions, making it a transformative asset for Lithuania’s defense posture.
