Marking a critical advancement in its defense capabilities, Taiwan has introduced a new stealth-capable corvette that it has independently developed. The newly unveiled Danjiang warship, featuring a dual-hull catamaran structure for better balance and mobility, measures 60.4 meters long and 14 meters wide.
Designed for extended missions, the vessel can cruise at a top speed of 30 knots (roughly 55 kilometers per hour) and has a travel range of more than 1,800 nautical miles—enabling it to cover vast distances across regional waters. Armed with a combination of anti-ship and anti-air missiles alongside an automatic cannon system, the corvette is well-equipped to respond to multiple threats simultaneously.
This launch comes amid Taiwan’s intensified focus on enhancing its maritime security due to increasing military pressure from China. Beijing, which considers Taiwan a breakaway province, has repeatedly issued warnings and threatened to reclaim the island by force.
Coinciding with this naval progress, Taiwan has commenced its “Han Kuang” annual military maneuvers, scheduled between July 9 and 18. These drills are notable not only for the inclusion of American-supplied rocket systems but also for involving 22,000 personnel—including the largest number of reservists mobilized since the event’s inception in 1984. The exercises aim to prepare the armed forces for potential large-scale conflict scenarios involving Chinese aggression.
