Nokia has signed a strategic partnership with Latvian telecom operator Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) to co-develop a 5G-based tactical communications system designed for defense and military use across the Baltic region. The collaboration aims to deliver a secure, high-capacity, and resilient battlefield network capable of supporting real-time data sharing among military assets.

By integrating Nokia’s advanced radio technology with LMT’s defense communications expertise, the two companies will develop an interoperable and scalable system supporting AI-driven analytics, autonomous systems, and next-generation command-and-control applications. The platform will enable seamless connectivity between sensors, drones, and command centers, enhancing situational awareness and operational efficiency for defense users.

The partnership builds on previous Nokia–LMT collaborations in Latvia’s 5G defense projects, including live trials at the Ādaži military base, where the companies tested a portable 5G tactical network built on Nokia’s Banshee radio platform. These field demonstrations validated the system’s ability to deliver secure, high-speed communication in dynamic military environments.

This initiative adds to Nokia’s expanding global defense portfolio. The company recently partnered with Motorola Solutions to create a containerized tactical network for the UK Armed Forces, combining TETRA and AirScale 5G technologies for rapid deployment in under 30 minutes. Earlier collaborations with Rheinmetall in Germany and Lockheed Martin and Verizon in the US further underline Nokia’s growing presence in next-generation military communication systems across allied defense markets.
