The Polish Navy has launched the first of two signals intelligence (SIGINT) vessels being constructed by Sweden’s Saab under the Delfin program, aimed at replacing two aging Moma-class reconnaissance ships from the 1970s.
Named ORP Jerzy Różycki, after the renowned mathematician who helped break the Enigma code, the vessel will collect electronic maritime intelligence and conduct hydroacoustic surveillance of underwater threats, including unmanned systems.
Saab was awarded a €620 million ($730 million) contract in November 2022, with both vessels expected by 2027. The ships are being built at Remontowa Shipbuilding’s facility in Gdansk, with construction of the first and second ships starting in April and November 2023, respectively.
