Portugal has officially taken delivery of its first three A-29N Super Tucano aircraft from Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer. The aircraft arrived at the Alverca do Ribatejo facilities near Lisbon, where they will undergo preparation to align with NATO standards and the operational needs of the Portuguese Air Force.
The acquisition, approved in late 2024, forms part of a broader agreement for 12 aircraft under a €200 million ($210 million) contract. The package also includes a flight simulator, training support, and logistics services, ensuring long-term operational readiness for Portugal’s air fleet.
Designed as a versatile multi-mission platform, the A-29 Super Tucano comes with precision targeting systems, integrated weapons, and an advanced communication suite. Its rugged build and adaptability make it suitable for a wide range of missions, from close air support to surveillance and training.
Performance-wise, the Super Tucano can reach a maximum speed of 320 knots (592 km/h), cruise comfortably at 280 knots (519 km/h), and has a stalling speed of just 80 knots (148 km/h). With internal fuel, it can remain airborne for over three hours, while external fuel tanks extend endurance to more than five hours.
