General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and Norway’s Kongsberg Gruppen have successfully completed two major engineering reviews supporting the integration of the Joint Strike Missile (JSM) onto the MQ-9B unmanned aerial system. Completion of the System Requirements Review and Preliminary Design Review marks an important milestone, confirming that the program has advanced from initial concept definition to a more mature engineering and system integration phase. Conducted in Norway during late June, the reviews validated technical requirements and system architecture needed to equip both SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian variants with Kongsberg’s fifth-generation precision-guided missile. The integration effort is jointly funded by both companies and is intended to significantly expand the MQ-9B’s long-range precision strike capability while maintaining its proven intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance performance. Once operational, the upgraded platform will be capable of engaging high-value land and maritime targets using the low-observable Joint Strike Missile while conducting persistent reconnaissance missions. The development reflects growing military demand for multi-role unmanned aircraft capable of combining long-endurance surveillance with precision engagement across increasingly contested operational environments.
