Romania is moving forward with plans to purchase a nearly new Turkish naval vessel to bolster maritime security for its key offshore energy venture in the Black Sea. The vessel in question is the TCG Akhisar, part of Turkey’s Hisar-class offshore patrol fleet. According to Romanian news outlet HotNews, the acquisition is projected to cost around €223 million (approximately $260 million).
In addition to the purchase price, Romania is expected to invest a further €42 million (roughly $49 million) to bring the vessel to full operational readiness. The finalization of the deal remains contingent on approval from the Romanian Parliament.
The ship will play a crucial role in protecting the Neptune Deep Project—an offshore natural gas initiative being developed by Romanian energy firms OMV Petrom and Romgaz. The project is expected to significantly enhance Romania’s domestic gas production, potentially positioning the country as the European Union’s top gas producer.
