The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a five-year, £7.8 million ($10 million) contract with Serco to deliver maintenance and logistics support for the EJ200 engines powering the Royal Air Force’s (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets. The new agreement establishes a direct partnership between Serco and the RAF, replacing previous subcontracting arrangements managed through Rolls-Royce.
Under the deal, Serco will oversee maintenance activities at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, ensuring the continued operational readiness of the Typhoon fleet. The program will support around 26 technical and logistics positions, reinforcing the RAF’s domestic industrial capabilities and sustaining vital aerospace expertise within the UK defense sector.
The Eurofighter Typhoon, jointly developed by Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo, serves as one of Europe’s premier multirole combat aircraft. Equipped with two EJ200 turbofan engines, the jet delivers a combined thrust of 180 kilonewtons (40,464 pounds), enabling sustained supersonic flight without afterburners. The EJ200’s lightweight structure and advanced integrated health monitoring system allow up to 1,200 flying hours before unscheduled maintenance, enhancing fleet efficiency and mission availability across air defense and Quick Reaction Alert operations.
