In a move to modernize its attack helicopter fleet, South Korea intends to buy 36 additional AH-64E Apache Guardians from the U.S. This acquisition highlights Seoul’s strategic response to increasing regional instability and North Korea’s evolving military threats. The South Korean Army currently fields a mix of 36 AH-64Es and 55 AH-1F Cobras. While the Apaches, acquired in 2016–2017, are among the most advanced in terms of firepower and battlefield integration, the aging Cobras are based on outdated technology and are approaching the end of their operational life. The latest procurement marks a decisive shift toward forming a more unified and modern attack aviation force that can operate with enhanced lethality and efficiency in future conflict scenarios.
