The Spanish government has approved the contracting of Navantia to build two additional Buques de Acción Marítima (BAM) offshore patrol vessels for the navy. These ships will expand the current fleet of six BAM-class vessels, reinforcing maritime surveillance, security, and overall readiness of the maritime action force.

The program is valued at 716 million euros ($847 million) and incorporates improvements over previous models. The new vessels will feature advanced combat systems, next-generation integrated platform management, and upgraded communications and navigation equipment. Engineering will commence after the contract is finalized, with construction set to begin in early 2027.

Additional upgrades include the integration of unmanned systems, stronger cybersecurity frameworks, redesigned work areas, modernized medical facilities, and enhanced accommodations for crews. These improvements are aimed at boosting the navy’s ability to respond to evolving maritime security threats while also raising the quality of life on board.

Navantia will construct the ships at its Puerto Real shipyard, which leverages advanced automation and technology. Engineering design will utilize digital platforms from Navantia’s ELCANO program, built on Siemens technologies, ensuring modern efficiency and precision throughout the development process.
