Sweden has placed a major order with Saab for new sensors and a command-and-control system to enhance the army’s brigade-level ground-based air defense. The contract, valued at 2.1 billion kronor ($220 million), strengthens Stockholm’s investment in mobile short-range air defense as regional threats evolve.

The package includes Saab’s Giraffe 1X radar, the LSS Lv C2 system, weapons-system integration, technical studies, and a suite of spare parts to sustain long-term operations. Saab will also conduct an integration study examining how to complement the brigade’s air defense network with the company’s AMB medium-range radar, designed to detect incoming aircraft and unmanned aerial systems.

Deliveries are planned for 2027–2028, aligning with Sweden’s broader modernization schedule. The Giraffe 1X, previously ordered by Stockholm, provides full 360-degree surveillance and can identify threats as small as a milk carton at 4 kilometers (2.5 miles). Weighing under 150 kilograms, the compact system can be deployed in mobile, fixed, or rapidly relocatable configurations.

Saab’s LSS Lv C2 serves as the operational backbone of the air defense network, enabling coordinated target engagement, real-time threat sharing, and efficient planning and assessment. Together, the new systems will significantly enhance Sweden’s responsiveness to modern aerial threats, including drones, missiles, and low-flying aircraft.
