Sweden has finalized the purchase of four C-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft from Brazilian aerospace firm Embraer, marking a major step in its ongoing airlift modernization effort. The move places Sweden alongside Austria and the Netherlands in a strategic NATO partnership centered on the C-390 platform, with the three nations collectively ordering nine aircraft in 2024.

The trilateral cooperation underscores shared goals of interoperability, joint training, and unified maintenance frameworks across European air forces. Under the contract, Sweden will also benefit from access to Embraer’s training programs and long-term lifecycle support, ensuring enhanced operational readiness.

In addition, the deal includes seven optional purchase slots, enabling future acquisitions by other European countries interested in the platform. Currently operational in Brazil, Portugal, and Hungary, the C-390 has demonstrated a mission capability rate of 93 percent and completion rates exceeding 99 percent.

The aircraft’s versatility allows it to carry 26 tons of payload, achieve speeds up to 470 knots, and perform diverse missions ranging from troop and cargo transport to firefighting and humanitarian operations. Its KC-390 variant also offers aerial refueling capabilities, making it one of the most adaptable airlifters in its class.
