Sweden has granted Saab a contract worth 4 billion krona ($360 million) to extend maintenance and support for its Gripen C/D and Gripen E fighter aircraft. The agreement builds upon a 2020 framework designed to secure long-term sustainment and modernization of the Gripen fleet through system upgrades, logistics, and technical services.
Under the renewed deal, Saab will continue providing system support, spare parts, component repair, and pilot and technician training between 2026 and 2027, with options to extend the work until 2029. The contract also covers software updates and mission system enhancements to align the aircraft with Sweden’s evolving defense needs and operational standards.
According to Saab, the contract will ensure a seamless transition between the Gripen C/D and the more advanced Gripen E, maintaining fleet readiness while bolstering Sweden’s domestic defense industry. Most of the work will take place within the country, supporting local employment in avionics, logistics, and systems integration.
This deal forms part of Sweden’s broader air force modernization efforts amid rising regional security challenges. Alongside the Gripen E production ramp-up, Sweden is upgrading its older C/D aircraft with enhanced mission systems and electronic warfare capabilities. The Swedish Air Force is also improving base infrastructure and expanding road-base operations to strengthen its dispersal and rapid response capabilities.
