Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has entered into a strategic agreement with E3 Lithium to explore the integration of Canadian lithium into the supply chain for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP). This initiative aims to strengthen domestic sourcing of critical materials while enhancing the sustainability and resilience of the defense supply chain. Beyond the immediate submarine program, both companies are evaluating opportunities to utilize Canada’s lithium production capacity for international defense and energy applications. Lithium-ion battery technology, known for its superior energy density compared to traditional lead-acid systems, plays a crucial role in enabling submarines to operate underwater for extended durations. As one of the two finalists competing for the multi-billion-dollar CPSP contract, TKMS stands to benefit significantly from localized sourcing. E3 Lithium, through its Clearwater Project, is positioned to produce up to 36,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium annually, contributing expertise in extraction, processing, and supply chain development. The collaboration also includes research initiatives, technology transfer, and potential investment strategies to build a robust ecosystem.
