The Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) has signed a contract amendment to retrofit Italy’s U212A Todaro-class submarines as part of the Near Future Submarine (NFS) program. The modernization will incorporate upgrades found on the newer NFS vessels.
This mid-life update includes sonar, propulsion, cybersecurity, and C2 improvements. It ensures parity across Italy’s future subsurface warfare fleet, while extending Todaro-class viability without acquiring entirely new hulls.
The update package also aims to reduce logistical divergence between legacy and future vessels, enabling shared maintenance chains and reducing total ownership costs in cooperation with major European naval contractors.
