The United Kingdom plans to expand its nuclear capabilities by acquiring 12 F-35A fighter jets equipped to carry nuclear weapons, marking the most significant enhancement to its nuclear posture in decades. This move will complement the nation’s existing deterrent force, which currently relies solely on submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

According to an official statement, the addition of these dual-capable aircraft will bolster the Royal Air Force’s operational capabilities and provide a stronger deterrent against emerging threats. The aircraft purchase will be officially unveiled at an upcoming NATO summit.

Until now, the UK’s contribution to NATO’s nuclear deterrence has been limited to its submarine fleet. The decision to reintroduce airborne nuclear delivery options reflects changing security dynamics in Europe and a growing emphasis on reinforcing NATO’s collective defense posture, especially amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

The newly acquired aircraft are slated to be based at an air station in eastern England.
