The US Army has granted Kopin Corporation a $15.4 million contract to develop ultra-bright, full-color MicroLED augmented reality (AR) displays for soldiers. These advanced systems are expected to significantly improve battlefield visibility, enabling troops to operate more effectively in both daytime and nighttime conditions. Unlike traditional displays, MicroLED technology delivers superior brightness, durability, and energy efficiency, making it well-suited for demanding operational environments.
According to Kopin, the award strengthens the company’s role as a central player in the US defense innovation and domestic manufacturing landscape. By pushing the boundaries of AR display technology, the firm aims to enhance soldier lethality, situational awareness, and overall mission effectiveness. The company emphasized that its AR solutions are designed to avoid visual glitches, ensuring consistent performance during long or complex missions.
This latest contract builds upon Kopin’s earlier initiatives, including the Soldier Display Trade Study and a Phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research agreement, both of which contributed to the development of an off-the-visor extended reality prototype. The new project also includes the establishment of a US-based production line, part of the Industrial Base Analysis program administered by the Army Contracting Command under the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
With more than four decades of experience, Kopin has already delivered over 400,000 vision systems for defense purposes. Earlier in April 2025, the company secured another $7.5 million deal to provide microdisplays for a Department of Defense contractor, underscoring its long-standing contribution to America’s defense technology base.
