On Friday, the U.S. government confirmed the approval of a $2.6 billion arms sale to Norway, involving the transfer of HH-60W combat rescue helicopters and supporting defense equipment. This high-value transaction, still pending Congressional approval, was disclosed by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) as part of ongoing efforts to reinforce NATO’s northern defenses.

The DSCA emphasized that this proposed sale would significantly strengthen Norway’s airborne operational capabilities, particularly in areas of combat rescue and special missions, enabling the country to respond more effectively to both domestic and allied defense needs. The agency noted that these aircraft will allow Norway to fulfill its obligations as a reliable NATO partner, capable of defending both its own territory and assisting in joint operations with other member states.

The State Department has already cleared the deal, and the DSCA’s notification to Congress marks a key procedural step toward its final authorization. Officials added that Norway’s defense forces possess the necessary infrastructure and expertise to seamlessly incorporate the new aircraft and associated support systems into their operations.
