LightPath Technologies is strengthening its role in advanced defense sensing technology after receiving an $11 million follow-on order for infrared camera systems used in counter-drone operations. The contract, awarded by an unnamed international technology company, highlights the growing demand for reliable thermal imaging solutions as military forces and security organizations face increasing challenges from unmanned aerial threats.The infrared cameras developed by LightPath are designed to enhance drone detection and tracking capabilities by identifying heat signatures generated by unmanned systems. These technologies are becoming increasingly important for protecting military bases, critical infrastructure, and public safety locations where unauthorized drones pose security risks.A major development under the program is LightPath’s plan to introduce its BlackDiamond infrared optical material as an alternative to traditional germanium lenses. While germanium has been widely used in thermal imaging systems for decades, global supply concerns have increased due to export restrictions and geopolitical challenges. BlackDiamond is expected to provide a dependable alternative while maintaining the performance required for advanced infrared applications.The new contract follows several recent defense achievements by LightPath, including a $9.6 million agreement for cooled infrared camera systems used in defense and security missions. The company has also expanded its naval presence through G5 Infrared’s partnership with L3Harris Technologies, supplying infrared cameras for the US Navy’s shipboard surveillance systems. These developments demonstrate LightPath’s growing contribution to next-generation battlefield awareness and threat detection technologies.
