Tobyhanna Army Depot, in partnership with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI), has launched a new maintenance and overhaul capability for the MQ-9 Reaper’s Ground Control Station. The upgrade allows full testing and refurbishment of key components such as Linux processors, file servers, and control consoles.

This initiative expands on a public-private collaboration that began in 2013, when Tobyhanna was named the designated repair hub for Ground Control Systems. Over the years, the partners have developed extensive training tools, technical documentation, and test procedures.

The MQ-9 Reaper is a multi-role drone used for surveillance and precision strikes. It has recently seen action in Yemen, engaging in responses to attacks from Iran-backed Houthi forces.

As drone operations grow in importance, the US is ramping up its modernization efforts. Alongside maintenance enhancements, new prototypes are being developed for small drone detection using commercial technologies, aiming for fast, cost-effective deployment.
