South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem has entered into a strategic partnership with U.S.-based defense technology firm Shield AI to jointly develop artificial intelligence (AI)-powered drones and autonomous control systems designed to support ground troops in modern combat operations.
The agreement was officially signed during a ceremony in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, marking a key step in South Korea’s ongoing efforts to expand its presence in the field of AI-driven defense technologies. The collaboration will focus on building autonomous platforms capable of operating with minimal human supervision while maintaining high reliability in complex battlefield environments.
By combining Hyundai Rotem’s expertise in armored vehicle and robotics manufacturing with Shield AI’s combat-proven AI autonomy software, the partners aim to deliver next-generation solutions that can navigate, coordinate, and execute missions across land and air domains. These systems are expected to enhance situational awareness, reduce operator workload, and enable real-time decision-making during fast-paced combat scenarios.
The partnership reflects a broader trend in global defense modernization as militaries shift toward asymmetric and hybrid warfare, where unmanned systems and AI coordination play an increasingly critical role in surveillance, targeting, and tactical support operations.
