L3Harris Technologies has joined forces with Joby Aviation to create a next-generation vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft for defense operations. This advanced platform will incorporate a hybrid piloting system, allowing both human and autonomous control for flexible mission profiles.

The aircraft will use a gas turbine engine and is designed for various low-altitude support missions, from reconnaissance to logistics. The partnership aims to combine L3Harris’ strengths in communication, sensor systems, and autonomous capabilities with Joby’s established expertise in assembling commercial aircraft.

Testing of the hybrid VTOL system is set to begin this fall, with full operational demonstrations scheduled for the following year. The platform is expected to be based on Joby’s existing S4 airframe, which has already shown promise in the electric air taxi sector.

Joby Aviation, which has worked with the US military for nearly a decade, continues its efforts to secure FAA certification for its aircraft. The company recently expanded its production capabilities at its California plant to support upcoming demands.
