Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has officially approved a new unmanned ground combat robot for operational deployment, reinforcing Kyiv’s push to reduce troop exposure in high-intensity combat zones. The system, designated Zmiy Droid 12.7 NRK, is designed to perform both strike and reconnaissance missions on the modern battlefield.

The domestically developed robot is armed with a 12.7mm machine gun, allowing it to engage enemy personnel and light targets while operating in hazardous environments. Built on a combat-proven chassis, the Droid 12.7 NRK can maneuver across rugged terrain, including off-road routes, sand, snow, and shallow water, providing flexibility across diverse frontline conditions.

Survivability is a key feature of the platform, with an armored hull designed to withstand anti-personnel mine blasts and FPV drone attacks. The robot is operated through an advanced human-machine interface, enabling a single operator to control both the vehicle and its AI-enabled combat module simultaneously, streamlining battlefield management.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the system is intended for high-intensity frontline operations, replacing human soldiers in the most dangerous missions. The approval follows earlier battlefield successes with similar Ukrainian ground robots, which have demonstrated sustained combat endurance and effectiveness, signaling that the Droid 12.7 NRK is entering service as a mature and operationally validated capability.
