Ukraine is transforming its largest unmanned ground vehicle, the Protector, into a much more formidable battlefield asset. Once used primarily as a logistics and support platform, the Protector UGV has now been upgraded with a remotely operated Tavriia-12.7 combat turret, significantly enhancing its offensive capability and operational role at the front.
The new turret integrates a 12.7mm Browning M2 heavy machine gun equipped with a digital fire-control system. This advanced targeting architecture allows the UGV to detect, track, and engage a wide range of threats across the battlespace, including enemy infantry, armored vehicles, helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems. The upgrade positions the Protector as a versatile platform capable of supporting assault operations and defending troops in high-risk zones.
The integration of the Tavriia-12.7 turret marks a major step in Ukraine’s efforts to adapt unmanned systems to evolving combat requirements. By converting a logistics-focused vehicle into a weaponized robotic system, Ukraine is expanding its autonomous warfare capabilities and strengthening force protection in contested environments. The enhancement highlights the growing role of UGVs in modern ground combat, particularly in drone-dense theaters like Ukraine.
