In an effort to bolster maritime domain awareness and regional security, the Royal New Zealand Navy has deployed two Bluebottle USVs to Fiji under Operation Calypso. These solar- and wave-powered autonomous vessels were transported aboard HMNZS Canterbury and are now operational off the Fijian coast, patrolling for threats such as unauthorized fishing and narcotics smuggling. This joint operation exemplifies transnational collaboration in tackling non-traditional maritime security challenges in the Pacific.

HMNZS Canterbury plays a pivotal role as both the logistical delivery platform and the mission’s floating command center. The versatile vessel is equipped for amphibious, relief, and military operations, boasting a helicopter flight deck and significant transport capacity. Additionally, overhead reconnaissance is being provided by a No. 42 Squadron King Air aircraft from the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Meanwhile, Bluebottle activities are tracked in real-time at a coordination center in Suva staffed by New Zealand and Fijian naval personnel. Outside active hours, the mission’s command transitions to HMNZS Matataua in Auckland, ensuring seamless operational oversight.
