AeroVironment has supplied the US Army with an initial batch of P550 small uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) under the Long-Range Reconnaissance program. Along with the drones, the company delivered training systems and master trainers to ensure smooth operator instruction and rapid fielding.

The P550, unveiled in October 2024, is an AI-powered, electric drone with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities. Designed for both reconnaissance and strike missions, the platform follows a Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) to allow flexible upgrades.

As a Group 2 drone, the P550 weighs 55 pounds (24.9 kilograms) and carries up to 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms) of payload. It offers up to five hours of endurance on a single battery charge and can quickly resume missions by swapping or recharging its battery.

The system emphasizes adaptability, allowing reconfiguration in just five minutes without tools. Payloads and batteries can be hot-swapped in the field, providing soldiers with a versatile and mission-ready platform for diverse operations.
