The United States has cleared a proposed Foreign Military Sale to Bulgaria valued at $620 million, aimed at enhancing the country’s coastal defense capabilities. The package includes a Naval Strike Missile Coastal Defense System along with a broad range of supporting equipment and services.

Central to the sale are tactical Naval Strike Missiles and three Link-16 Multifunctional Information Distribution System–Joint Tactical Radio Systems, which will significantly enhance Bulgaria’s real-time battlefield communications. The deal also covers mobile fire control centers and missile launch vehicles, each integrated with advanced communications systems to enable coordinated operations.

Additional equipment includes GPS receivers, operator training consoles, and specialized systems for missile transportation and loading. Technical integration support and advisory assistance will be provided by both the U.S. government and the contractor.

Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace, headquartered in Norway, has been named as the main contractor for the program. To ensure proper implementation and training, three to five U.S. personnel—both government and contractor representatives—will be temporarily stationed in Bulgaria.

Washington has stated that this defense deal supports broader U.S. foreign policy goals by reinforcing the security capabilities of Bulgaria, a key NATO member. It is also expected to improve the nation’s ability to deter threats and enhance its operational integration with NATO and U.S. forces.
