Sweden has announced plans to invest 15 billion kronor ($1.6 billion) to strengthen its national air defense capabilities, with a particular focus on protecting civilian infrastructure and other high-value targets. The decision marks Sweden as the latest European nation to significantly increase military spending in response to heightened security risks following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to the Swedish government, the funding will be directed toward acquiring and upgrading ground-based air defense systems capable of countering a wide range of aerial threats. Officials emphasized that recent battlefield developments in Ukraine have underscored the critical role of layered and resilient air defense in protecting both military assets and civilian populations.
The investment comes amid broader geopolitical shifts, including concerns over Russia’s continued military aggression and uncertainty surrounding future US engagement with NATO allies. These factors have accelerated defense modernization efforts across Europe, as governments move to bolster deterrence and national resilience.
Swedish authorities noted that the first procurement actions under the new air defense initiative are expected to take place in the first quarter of 2026. The move follows similar defense spending increases elsewhere in Europe, including Germany’s approval of a $59 billion defense package in December, highlighting a continent-wide push to rearm.
