India’s 2018 decision to procure Russia’s S-400 Triumf air defense system instead of the U.S.-made Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system reflects a strategic shift in its air defense approach. As reported by Sputnik India, the S-400’s modular and integrated system design gives it an advantage, allowing it to engage a variety of aerial threats—including aircraft, UAVs, and ballistic missiles—at different ranges and altitudes. Unlike THAAD, which is tailored mainly for intercepting high-altitude ballistic missiles, the S-400 offers a more comprehensive solution, combining short-, medium-, and long-range missile capabilities. Its compatibility with multiple radar systems further enhances its performance in layered defense scenarios, making it a more adaptable and versatile option for India’s evolving defense needs.
