The Indian Air Force is working toward integrating the Meteor missile into the HAL Tejas Mk2 as part of its long-term strategy to enhance beyond-visual-range combat capabilities. However, the process faces significant technical and policy-related challenges, largely due to the aircraft’s indigenous architecture centered around the Uttam AESA radar. Integration of the Meteor requires deep access to sensitive software interfaces, including radar-missile communication protocols, which are tightly controlled by MBDA. This has created a bottleneck, as such access is rarely granted for non-European systems. Potential solutions being explored include a “black box” integration approach or expanded industrial collaboration within India. Meanwhile, India is actively advancing indigenous alternatives such as Astra Mk2 and Mk3, which aim to deliver comparable or superior performance, ensuring long-term autonomy in air combat capabilities.
