Vietnam is on the cusp of finalizing a landmark $700-million agreement with India to acquire BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, cementing its commitment to military modernization and regional deterrence. The forthcoming deal will see air-launched and ground-based variants of the BrahMos integrated with the Vietnam People’s Air Force’s Su-30 fighter jets and land-based batteries—boosting both strike range and operational flexibility for Vietnamese defense forces.

This procurement follows previous signals of interest, including a proposed $625-million package for three to five batteries last year, and positions Vietnam as the second country in Asia to field BrahMos missiles after the Philippines. The impending contract forms a critical part of Hanoi’s strategy to counter regional threats and assert greater control over its defense priorities through advanced, high-speed missile technology.

The Indo-Vietnamese missile partnership further strengthens defense ties between the two countries, aligning with India’s goal of building alliances and supporting “Make in India” defense exports. The BrahMos’s combination of supersonic speed, high operating altitude, and targeting accuracy make it a powerful deterrent and reassurance to allies in Southeast Asia’s evolving security environment.
