Malaysia is set to receive Norway’s Naval Strike Missile (NSM) in March as part of a phased modernization plan to replace its Exocet MM40 Block 2 inventory. Developed by Kongsberg, the 400-kg missile measures 4 meters in length and is powered by a solid rocket booster and TRI-40 turbojet engine. It carries a penetrating blast-fragmentation warhead and can strike targets beyond 110 nautical miles at speeds exceeding 1,100 km/h. The NSM acquisition is complemented by Turkey’s ATMACA anti-ship missile, expected in 2028. Both systems are undergoing evaluation for long-range precision, radar evasion, and compatibility with modern sensor networks. This upgrade aligns with Malaysia’s 2015 naval restructuring strategy aimed at consolidating its fleet into five core ship classes by 2050.
