North Korea has unveiled a new short-range air defense system that appears heavily influenced by Russia’s Pantsir platform. The system was showcased at the Defense Development 2025 exhibition, where photos revealed notable similarities in design and layout to the Russian original.

Unlike the Pantsir’s wheeled chassis, Pyongyang’s variant is mounted on a tracked platform, suggesting a shift toward greater mobility in rugged or contested environments. The adaptation could enhance the system’s ability to accompany armored formations or operate in off-road conditions, where wheeled vehicles may face limitations.

Analysts note that the tracked design points to North Korea’s effort to improve survivability and integration within combined-arms units. The system is likely intended to counter short-range aerial threats such as drones, low-flying aircraft, and precision-guided munitions — reflecting Pyongyang’s growing emphasis on layered air defense capabilities.
