Norway’s defense procurement agency has awarded a 1-billion Norwegian krona ($99 million) contract to Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA) to deliver advanced components for the NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System). The new upgrades are designed to enhance system performance, communication speed, and overall battlefield survivability.

Under the agreement, Kongsberg will supply modern command posts, mobile communication nodes, and advanced radio systems to improve the operational efficiency of Norway’s air defense network. These systems will integrate seamlessly with the four NASAMS batteries already procured since 2024, all equipped with next-generation launchers, upgraded fire control centers, and improved missile systems.

A key part of the upgrade includes replacing the existing VHF Multi Role Radio with Kongsberg’s new THOR Combat Net Radio, a next-generation communication solution that offers higher capacity, better connectivity, and enhanced security features. This will allow Norway’s air defense units to maintain robust communications even in complex and contested environments.

The improved command posts and communication nodes are expected to significantly increase decision-making speed and operational tempo, strengthening Norway’s ability to counter evolving aerial threats. With these enhancements, Norway aims to bolster the survivability and effectiveness of its NASAMS systems in national and NATO defense missions.
