Romania has signed a $168 million contract with Raytheon for the procurement of additional Patriot air and missile defense system components, reinforcing the country’s efforts to strengthen its multi-layered air defense architecture. The agreement reflects Bucharest’s continued focus on enhancing national and NATO-aligned defensive capabilities amid evolving regional security challenges.

The contract includes the delivery of radars, command-and-control systems, launchers, test equipment, and associated support services. This marks Romania’s second Patriot-related order this year, following a similar agreement signed in April, underscoring the country’s sustained investment in advanced air and missile defense systems.

Romania is currently under contract for seven Patriot systems, with deliveries having begun in 2020 and full completion expected by 2030. In 2023, the Romanian Armed Forces received four Patriot systems, including one that was later transferred as military assistance to Ukraine to bolster Kyiv’s defensive capabilities in response to Russia’s invasion.

Developed by Raytheon, the Patriot system is a mobile surface-to-air and anti-ballistic missile defense platform integrating advanced radar sensors, antenna mast groups, engagement control stations, and launchers. Capable of intercepting targets at altitudes of up to 36,000 meters and speeds exceeding 6,000 km/h, Patriot has been continuously upgraded since its introduction in the 1980s. With more than 1,100 systems produced, it is currently operated by 19 countries worldwide, including the United States, and secured new European contracts in 2025 from Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands.
