Slovenia has ordered two more IRIS-T SLM fire units from Germany’s Diehl Defence under the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). This follows its initial purchase of one system in January 2024.

The latest order includes TRML-4D radar, a tactical operations center, missile launchers, IRIS-T missiles, logistical support, a mobile workshop, spare parts, and reloading vehicles. The contract was signed by Germany’s BAAINBw agency in July and announced in August.

This marks the first follow-up procurement under the ESSI program. Launched after the war in Ukraine began, the ESSI aims to strengthen Europe’s aerial and missile defense network through coordinated multinational purchases.

The IRIS-T SLM system provides 360-degree protection against aerial threats like drones, cruise missiles, and aircraft. Mounted on MAN 8×8 trucks, the launchers carry eight interceptors with a 40 km range and can engage targets up to 20 km in altitude.
