Taiwan is taking significant steps to strengthen its air defense capabilities by developing cost-effective munitions to counter the growing threat of low-cost weapons used by China. As modern warfare increasingly involves large-scale drone and missile attacks, Taiwan aims to introduce affordable interceptors that can handle low-level threats efficiently. This strategy allows the military to preserve its advanced and expensive missile systems for more critical and complex targets. The initiative is being led by the National Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology, with testing expected to begin next year. In parallel, Taiwan is increasing its defense budget, planning to allocate around $40 billion over the next eight years. A major component of this effort is the development of the “T-Dome” air defense system, which is designed as a multi-layered shield capable of intercepting threats at low, medium, and high altitudes. The system integrates domestic platforms such as Strong Bow, Sky Bow III, and Sky Sword II with advanced US-supplied Patriot missile systems. Additionally, Taiwan has approved the purchase of over 100 PAC-3 interceptors and plans to acquire more NASAMS units to strengthen its defense network. This comprehensive approach ensures faster response times, improved detection, and a more resilient defense against potential large-scale attacks.
