The United States has cleared the sale of the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) to Egypt in a deal valued at $4.67 billion, according to an announcement made on Thursday. The sophisticated NASAMS system, which has recently proven effective on the battlefield in Ukraine against Russian air assaults, is intended to bolster Egypt’s capability to detect and counter a wide range of airborne threats.

A statement issued by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) emphasized that the proposed arms sale would “improve Egypt’s capability to meet current and future threats” by enhancing its air defense operations. The agency added that this deal will further reinforce broader U.S. foreign policy and security objectives by strengthening a strategic non-NATO partner seen as vital for maintaining political stability and promoting economic growth in the Middle East.

Although the U.S. State Department has green-lit the potential deal, the transaction is still subject to final approval from Congress. The DSCA has formally notified lawmakers as part of the required process before the sale can proceed.
