The US State Department has approved a $340 million support package for Japan’s Hypersonic Velocity Gliding Projectile (HVGP) initiative. This agreement includes testing assistance, coordination activities, logistics, and technical support. Designed for island defense, the HVGP combines a ballistic missile with a hypersonic glide vehicle capable of high-speed precision strikes. With a range of up to 900 km, the system enhances Japan’s ability to counter regional threats. Developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the program reflects Tokyo’s push to strengthen its defense readiness amid rising Indo-Pacific tensions.
