The US State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles – Extended Range (AMRAAM-ER) to Denmark, with the package valued at up to $951 million. The proposed sale includes 236 AMRAAM-ER missiles, five AIM-120C-8 guidance sections, load trainers, missile containers, and a full suite of logistics, spare parts, and program support.

According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the RTX-manufactured missiles are intended to ensure Denmark fields modern air-to-air and surface-to-air munitions capable of defending both aircraft and ground-based air defense units. If finalized, the acquisition would significantly strengthen Denmark’s interoperability with US and NATO forces, supporting integrated air and missile defense operations.

The approval follows a $3.73 billion clearance earlier this month, which included an Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS), Indirect Fire Protection Capability, and 200 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles. Together, the two packages represent a major expansion of Denmark’s air defense and command-and-control capabilities.

The AMRAAM-ER acquisition aligns with Copenhagen’s broader defense modernization drive amid heightened regional security concerns linked to Russia. Denmark recently signed a €500 million contract with Kongsberg for the NASAMS air defense system, which employs AMRAAM missiles in both standard and extended-range variants and can also fire AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles.
