The U.S. State Department has authorized a potential $301 million Foreign Military Sale to Italy covering 100 AGM-158B/B-2 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles – Extended Range (JASSM-ER), along with mission support equipment and technical services, according to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA). Washington has formally informed Congress of the intended package, which reinforces Italy’s growing role within NATO’s long-range strike segment.

More than a routine transaction, the move places Italy among a very small number of European nations acquiring long-range precision strike capabilities with stand-off ranges approaching 1,000 kilometers. In the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and elevated strategic pressures around NATO’s eastern flank, the JASSM-ER acquisition effectively transforms Italy’s F-35 fleet from a primarily tactical air platform into a long-range conventional deterrence asset.

The proposed deal includes a comprehensive support ecosystem rather than just a missile batch. Besides the JASSM-ER inventory, Italy would receive classified testing tools, encryption hardware, equipment containers, spare and repair parts, consumables, technical documentation, transport support, and a wide portfolio of software and integration services. U.S. government and contractor assistance will accompany the transfer to ensure long-term sustainment and operational readiness.

DSCA emphasized that the $301 million estimate reflects an upper cost ceiling, based on Italy’s early requirements, with actual contract values expected to fall after configuration, procurement authority, and scope are finalized. Italian defense planners view the arrangement as locking in access to a mature American deep-strike system while retaining flexibility to tailor the final package under future budgets.
