A US space surveillance payload has successfully entered orbit aboard Japan’s QZS-7 navigation satellite, completing the launch phase of a bilateral security-space initiative between Washington and Tokyo. The satellite was launched from the Tanegashima Space Center using Japan’s H3 rocket. The mission includes the second of two US-developed sensors hosted on Japanese satellites but operated by the US Space Force. These payloads are designed to monitor objects in geosynchronous orbit and provide near-real-time information to the US Space Surveillance Network. Geosynchronous orbit is a strategically important region containing communication, navigation, and missile-warning satellites. Maintaining awareness of activity in this environment is increasingly important as more nations and commercial operators expand their presence in space. The program, established through a 2020 US-Japan agreement, combines American sensor technology with Japanese satellite platforms. MIT Lincoln Laboratory developed the sensors, while Mitsubishi Electric built the host spacecraft. The partnership reflects growing cooperation between the two countries in space security and Indo-Pacific deterrence efforts.
