US President Donald Trump has directed the Pentagon to examine the possibility of returning to steam-powered aircraft catapults for future Navy carriers instead of continuing with the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS). The proposal would primarily affect future Ford-class vessels still under construction. EMALS uses electromagnetic force to launch aircraft and was designed to improve efficiency, reduce maintenance, and support a wider range of aircraft types. Supporters argue that the system offers operational advantages and lowers manpower requirements. Critics, however, have questioned the complexity and reliability of electromagnetic technologies. Returning to steam-powered systems could require substantial modifications to ships designed around advanced electrical architectures. Industry experts warn that such changes could increase costs and create schedule delays. The debate highlights broader questions about balancing proven technologies with modern innovations in future naval programs.
