UK Research Team Develops Advanced Detector for Operations in Poor VisibilityThe UK is developing a new sensing capability intended to help soldiers operate more effectively when smoke, dust, and other obscurants interfere with normal visibility.The work is being conducted by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, together with Amethyst Research and Lancaster University. The project combines three technologies into a detector designed to identify infrared signals under difficult conditions.Battlefield obscurants can create serious problems for soldiers and sensors. Smoke and dust can block visible-light observations and generate unwanted thermal effects that make it harder for infrared systems to distinguish useful signals.The new detector addresses this challenge through a thin absorber layer. The material is designed to reduce unwanted heat interference, allowing the sensor to detect weaker infrared signals while maintaining precision.Improved infrared detection could give troops better awareness when visibility is degraded. Such technology could be particularly useful during military operations in environments where smoke, dust, or other obscurants are deliberately or naturally present.The research is part of the UK’s wider effort to develop advanced battlefield sensing technologies.
