South Korea is increasing its investment in unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) as the country faces a continuing decline in the number of soldiers available for military service. According to British analytics firm GlobalData, the issue is becoming an important factor behind Seoul’s plans to expand the use of robotic ground systems.
South Korea had approximately 450,000 active-duty troops in 2025, compared with around 560,000 personnel in 2019. The reduction has created pressure to find technologies that can perform selected military tasks without requiring additional human operators. As a result, UGVs are being considered for a range of missions that could otherwise require significant manpower.
The country’s interest in ground robotics is therefore linked to both military modernization and changing personnel requirements. Robotic vehicles can potentially support soldiers by carrying out repetitive, hazardous or manpower-intensive tasks. Their expected roles include logistics, surveillance and mine clearance, allowing human personnel to concentrate on missions that require direct decision-making and combat skills.
GlobalData estimates that South Korea could spend roughly $140 million on ground robotics procurement through 2036. The projected investment indicates that unmanned systems are expected to become a more significant part of the country’s future military structure.
The focus on UGVs also reflects a broader shift toward using autonomous and remotely operated systems in modern armed forces. For South Korea, the technology could help address personnel shortages while improving the ability to maintain operational coverage across different missions.
As the available military workforce continues to change, Seoul’s approach shows how demographic pressure can influence defence procurement. Instead of relying entirely on increasing troop numbers, the country is exploring robotic platforms to supplement existing forces and support missions such as transportation, reconnaissance and mine detection.
